Middle School Assistant Principal for Teaching & Learning

This position reports directly to the Middle School Principal

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required (preferably in curriculum instruction).
  • Experience: Minimum of three years experience as a classroom teacher
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: strong leadership, thorough understanding of school operations, strong written and oral communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, computer competence, working knowledge of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learners, student management

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Middle School Assistant Principal for Teaching & Learning works with the Middle School Principal to advance the mission and vision of NCCS in the Middle School. This position supports all learners (faculty and students) in the pursuit of academic excellence and spiritual formation. The Assistant Principal’s responsibilities include keeping up with current research on educational pedagogy, customizing professional learning and goal setting for all Middle School faculty, and overseeing improved alignment and innovation in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Instructional Coach

  • Coach, mentor, and collaborate with teachers in small groups and individually to further teacher growth, especially in inquiry based learning models and practices, as well as biblical integration and spiritual formation
  • Cultivate and celebrate faculty and staff in improving their craft and practicing key focus areas like project-based learning, student centered approaches, real-world learning, and building diverse networks that expand our impact for Christ
  • Collaborate and regularly engage with the academic leaders of the school to bridge the gap between where we are currently as a school to where we strive to be
  • Promote and forward innovations in the Middle School, especially those that foster deeper, student-centered learning
  • Assists the school in strengthening and enhancing instructional programs in place at the school

Curriculum & Assessment Designer

  • Lead regular curriculum reviews and facilitate vertical alignment of learning outcomes and curriculum guides both within Middle School and on the bridges between Lower and Upper School
  • Challenge teachers to develop a more balanced approach to assessment including a more sophisticated knowledge of how to use formative and summative assessments, as well as authentic assessments
  • Expand the faculty’s capacity to use backwards design in unit planning and foster a more collaborative and collegial approach where faculty spur one another towards greater professional learning and growth
  • Provides leadership in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Engages with staff in data analysis for best instructional practices and results
  • Utilizes data to organize and develop strategies for students who are experiencing difficulties

Professional Learning Facilitator

  • Assist in creating and leading professional learning for faculty, collaborating with the academic leaders of the school
  • Identify conferences, trainings, networking opportunities, and other personalized experiences to help position NCCS teachers to be the best in field
  • Help analyze and interpret standardized test scores along with principals, department chairs, and the testing coordinator in order to improve our academic program

Researcher and Designer

  • Stay informed on current research on innovation, education, and schools that are implementing innovative practices and programs, particularly related to Christian spiritual formation and a biblical worldview
  • Serve as a catalyst and resource for teachers by actively designing and iterating new ways of assessment that more clearly reflect real-world assessment practices
  • Provide strategic academic leadership for the achievement of NCCS objectives and strategic plans

Misc. Responsibilities

  • Learning recovery leader, meets with parents and helps to set goals and create a plan for recovery, to include meeting with parents as necessary
  • Stepping in where needed to provide support for the Middle School administrative team
  • Work with the principals or AP’s in the other divisions in the lower and upper school to ensure that vertical integration and curriculum is aligned K-12th grade
  • Assist with creating and delivering professional learning
  • Assist with evaluation of teachers using Danielson Framework
  • Assist with review of academic policies, course catalog/offeries, syllabus, course request process, resource and curriculum selection, learning outcome/curriculum guide review/audit, and updating
